What Do Floral Facts Have To Do With Good Mental Health?

It’s a Fact: 88% of people agree that a gift of flowers changes your mood for the better.

Behavioural research conducted at Rutgers University proves the presence of flowers has an immediate impact on happiness and increases life satisfaction and enjoyment.

A behavioural research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, reveals that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh flowers are present in the home.

The Harvard research is proof that if we live in places that lift our spirits, we can live happier, healthier lives.  Fresh flowers are the perfect everyday accessory for any budget – they add color, fragrance and style – and now we know they even increase energy and compassion.

Rutgers University researchers explored the link between flowers and life satisfaction in a 10-month study of participants’ behavioural and emotional responses to receiving flowers. They learned that the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions; heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behaviour in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.

  • Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. Study participants expressed true, sincere smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups studied.
  • Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
  • Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.

So, there you have it. Although we believe that snowflakes are kisses from heaven, research proves
that the gift of flowers greatly contributes to one’s mental health!
